• windstreken Folies (CD, £11.50)

The name of the Dutch band Windstreken will sound strange to non-Dutch people. It has a double meaning. Literally ‘windstreken’ can be translated as ‘corners of the earth’, but there is a playful association as well: ‘wind’ refers to the wind instruments the band uses. Windstreken combines jazz improvisation with medieval and contemporary classical music as well as Indian and North African traditions. The eclectic line-up of alto flute, saxophone, ud, classical organ, cello and percussion is further enhanced with the special addition of some renowned guest musicians, Nicole Jordan (soprano) and Leonard Evers (trumpet/flugelhorn). Tracks: Jumelles / Indian Summer / Folies / She’s Like The Swallow / Paraglider / Barq / Douce Dame Jolie / Hautes Fagnes / Lamma Bada Yatathanna / Prelude / C’est Un Amant Ouvrez La Porte / Oktober / Song
