• dennis brown The Half / Bless Me Jah / Dub (12", £15.95)

    label: Jah Fingers

Brown recorded the first cut of his moving roots reality tune, 'The Half' in 1972, one of a handful of great records he voiced for astute producer Phil Pratt shortly before linking with Niney. Such was the continued relevance of the tune that Brown returned to it in 1977, recording a new self-produced extended version, issued by Weed Beat in Jamaica and subsequently on Brown's own DEB Music imprint in both Jamaica and the UK. Bassist Flabba Holt revisited the rhythm in 1998 for Brown's 'Bless Me Jah' album. Both the vocal portions of 'The Half' and 'Bless Me Jah' are taken from that set, while each of the dubs is previously unreleased.
